The Anonymous Letters of C Forestier (bought via itch.io before the censorship scandal, but it's also available at other retailers) by Felicia Davin (The Gardener's Hand) was a lot of fun! It's Book 3 of the French Letters, an epistolary story mixing 19th-century fantasy and queer romance (with some erotic content).

Each volume focuses on different characters, but they know one another and the plot is related, so I recommend reading them in order. There's also some nice humour here and there.

This tome has major f/nb between a bisexual woman and a genderfluid protagonist. New characters include an aromantic woman and a minor trans female character, old ones an nb/nb pairing and an f/f (gnc)/m triad.

This week's song comes from the 1990 movie, "Texasville", which is a sequel to the movie, "The Last Picture Show".
Pat Benatar wrote the song "Hell Is For Children" after reading an article or was it seeing a program about child abuse, and it has become a life long cause for her.

Last Week's Movie Quote...

Princess Ann: Is this the elevator?
Joe Bradley: This is my ROOM!

It came from the 1953 classic, "Roman Holiday".
It starred Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, and Eddie Albert.
She plays a princess who runs away from her royal duties and spends the day or two with a couple of press guys.

Welcome to a post in which I give unnecessarily elliptical answers to perfectly straightforward questions.

  1. one place you volunteer (or would like to)? Why?

I don’t volunteer consistently at a single venue / charity, but I do public outreach talks for societies and schools. I do it because people seem to like hearing about space, and I’m enthusiastic about it.

  2. one book you'd like to see made into a movie? Why?

I’d still like to see “Neuromancer” visualised. I understand it’s being made into a TV series

  3. one creature (living, extinct, or mythical) you'd like for a pet? Why?

I’m quite happy with my cats, thank you. We are exquisitely compatible.

  4. one place on Earth you'd like to visit? Why?

I’ve travelled a lot in my life. A LOT. I haven’t been to the largest variety of places - mostly North America and Europe with a couple of visits to Kenya - and to be honest, I am not as enamoured with it as I used to be. There are two places I’d still like to see: my father’s birthplace, and the Great Barrier Reef. But if I don’t get the opportunity, I won’t feel like I haven’t seen enough of the world.

  5. one talent or skill you'd like to develop? Why?

I’m pretty good at not spending much time reflecting on the actions of people who have hurt me or made it obvious that they dislike me. What I’d really love to do is have the ability to make that no time at all. Life’s too short.

After a gentle, slow decline into feeble old age, our beloved cranky gerbil, Nibbles, died last weekend.

I shall miss his almond-seeking nose boops. Rest well, Nibsy. Enjoy chasing your brother and Tiny the hamster in Small Rodent Valhalla.

Fantastic Four was a lot of fun. It's not an origin story, despite the title.

I'm not big on this team, but I appreciated that there was a very strong focus on the fact that they're scientists, not just superheroes.

There are 2 mid/post-credits scenes.

I'm feeling this inertia right now
Trapped in infinite loop
That magic 8
Lost on the track
Derailed and ensnared
by glossy promises
and rose-colored lenses

But
what if

This is as good as it gets?

What if this freedom consumes me whole?
The deep freeze is coming
but everyone is in denial
I have seen it
I have been in the trenches

But sight isn't enough
— You have to live it
You had to be like
the phoenix

I am the clay, though
Wet with worry
Too pliable
made in the image
of a foregone age
of prosperity

Monsoon Queen by Jo Carthage was awesome! Noor, a Somali slave hiding her magic, escapes her master and joins the Yemeni resistance against the British Empire.

This book has amazing worldbuilding based on East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It starts in Tajoura (which is now located in Djibouti), then goes to Yemen, in 1812 (Gregorian calendar) / 1227 (Islamic calendar).

I found this novel a little too short (40k+), but there will thankfully be 4 of them. The characters are interesting, and there's one I'm feral about.

There's major f/f and m/m.

Last Week's Movie Quote...

Semyon: Got a smoke? No?
Anton: Sorry I don't smoke.
[Anton walks away]
The Bear: He didn't recognize you. Now what?
Semyon: Nothing... He's a human now

It comes from the 2006 Russian movie, "Day Watch".
I first knew of this movie by the book series that was recommended by a former journal friend.
The book series was really good.
The movies were good too, but if I remember correctly, they didn't follow the books very well.
They are a good vs evil story telling. Light vs Dark.

A lot of us have gotten behind Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, and against The Felon in his attacks on California,
And then Newsom turns around and does shit like this.......

Gavin Newsom agrees with anti-trans talking points on yet another MAGA podcast

The California governor spent more than four hours on the Shawn Ryan Show talking about, among other things, trans athletes, gender-affirming care, and "the whole 'pronoun' thing."
