Biggie and Julio Take Over The Bed

PXL_20250527_203401449.MP

The house is clean. The freezer has ice cream.

I got confirmation back from everyone with NO more phone calls!! The closing is confirmed. The money will be whisked off to my investment account on Friday. The monthly payment of my Timber Ridge bill will start in June. What a wonderful thing that is.

There are bits left but mostly they mean money to me. Seattle City light is the weirdest. I've been a customer in good standing with them for more than 30 years. I've never had a bill more than $100. My current bill is paid in full - all $20 of it. There are 5 days outstanding so... maybe $5. And yet, I had to pay them $250 at closing. WTF??? They will, as explained to me, send it all back to me after they take out their $5.

Clothes are washed. Dishes are washed. House is clean.

And tomorrow they come to install my new shades.

I got no complaints.

I didn't really bother trying not to be obvious when I wrote this for [personal profile] sanguinity:

Excerpt from the Journal of Captain Keith Windham for August 14-16, 1745 (1011 words) by Luzula
Fandom: The Jacobite Trilogy | The Flight of the Heron Series - D. K. Broster
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ewen Cameron/Keith Windham
Characters: Keith Windham, Ewen Cameron
Additional Tags: Diary/Journal, Missing Scene

It was fun to write a bit of Keith's journal from when he first met Ewen! It was equally obvious that [personal profile] sanguinity was the one who wrote me this lovely "Mr Rowl" fic:

Nary a Cause for Tears (9400 words) by sanguinity
Chapters: 4/4
Fandom: "Mr Rowl" - D. K. Broster
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Raoul des Sablières/Hervey Barrington, Raoul des Sablières/Juliana Forrest
Characters: Hervey Barrington, Raoul des Sablières, Lavinia Barrington, Hannah Jeremy, Juliana Forrest, John Jeremy (Mr Rowl)
Additional Tags: Epistolary, Enemies to Lovers, Bittersweet, Missing Scenes, Canon Compliant, Pining, (but not only pining!)
Summary: If he dies here, that will be his final judgement of me: that I take joy in his suffering.

Were it true, I would be a happier man this night.

It is a fic with many layers: an academic framing, a journal intended for public consumption, and the same character's secret journal. I really enjoyed how these layers interplayed with each other, and of course it's great to get Barrington's POV on the canon events (and more than the canon events, too!). There are some lovely missing scenes here.

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: We all probably have multiple WiPs, but which of yours has been hanging around longest, waiting to be finished?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

1. I participated in Science! This involved an MRI of my right calf while at rest and before, during, and after doing a minute of movement. I got paid, and used part of it to finally buy the Shape Note song book a college friend (from choir) worked on. The next step is to try and make at least a few of the monthly sings in my neighborhood this summer, while I'm off from regular choir.

OP: Hey, looking for a board book series from when I was a kid! It was traditional fairy tales and fables, and the part I really remember is the illustrations! I'm sure if I see those illustrations I'll know it's the right book!

Me: Care to describe these illustrations? Even a little? Were they brightly colorful or more muted, or maybe black and white? Were they realistic or cartoony?

OP: Oh, they looked similar to the hare and the tortoise board game! Like, when I saw that I first thought it was the books!

Me: Oh, I guess you're gonna make me google that instead of providing a link, cool.

Guys, it turns out there are at least five different editions of this game, each one with a totally different art style.

Meanwhile, on a different thread on the same post:

Other Commenter: Could it be Aesop's fables?

Me, silently: WTF, buddy? That's not a suggestion.

OP: Oh, no, it was more colorful than that!

Me, a bit less silently: WTF? Like... what edition are we talking about? You need to help us help you!

All comments are paraphrased, but seriously.

Edit: I am absolutely dying at this point to ask who, exactly, OP thinks Aesop is, but that conversation is not going to go anywhere productive. I'd really better forget the whole thing.

Timber Ridge recently revamped their front door security and, as part of that, people now sign in on an ipad that snaps their photo and then sends it in email and in text to the person they are coming to see. It's very handy for things like today - meeting a notary I've never seen before. Also once you sign in, it remembers you for next time which is also quite nice.

Today's Notary was not too chit chatty and very efficient. I signed my name a million times. At one point I was handed a form to fill in where I wanted the money to go. The lines of info did not match exactly with the instructions from the finance guy. Plus, copying by hand such critical info makes me very twitchy. Once I was done, the notary chirped 'Angela will call you about all of this' circling with her finger the stuff I had just filled in. 'She's very particular about getting it right.' ARUGH. The only thing more twitchy than my copying it by hand, is delivering it over the phone with no paper trail or way to see how the information was actually received.

Hey, I've got a great idea... why not just do it by email?????

So when I got back here, I sent Angela's assistant, the one who contacted me before - they are all at the title company - an email with the detail captured from the document, Geoff sent to me. I'm glad she's particular. I just hope she gets it right!

All the signing reminded me that I need to tell Seattle city Light to cut the juice. Which I now have done.

Oh Great. I just got a reply from my detailed wire transfer info. From the Title company saying 'thanks for this, i'll call to confirm'. Oh yeah. And bite me.

BretTheRealtor says the money should be in my account by Monday.

I'm ready for lunch and today is house cleaning day!

Remember the letter-writer asking how to manage someone with poorly controlled ADHD? Here’s the update.

I found your response very helpful and I’m working my way through all the comments as well. The situation was already resolved by the time this was published, but it’s helpful to reflect back on what I could have done better, and hopefully others will learn from this too!

It’s fascinating to see the commenters weighing in on the importance of accommodations vs personal responsibility. I’m also learning a lot about the uniqueness of ADHD coping methods, not only that different people find different approaches helpful, but also that the same person will need different approaches over time.

My update on the situation is that I did set explicit expectations about how long tasks should take, that she shouldn’t take on any side projects without checking with me first, that getting things done in a timely fashion was an essential part of her job (and more important than exhaustive detail), and that consistently clocking in and out for her shifts was a requirement that could lead to progressive discipline if not followed. I think my years of reading AAM helped me come up with those ideas even before you responded. If there’s one thing I’ve learned here, it’s that clearly-communicated expectations are essential!

Unfortunately the idea of us paying for an ADHD coach wasn’t feasible for someone at her level. That said, we do have a strong Employee Assistance Program here, and this kind of thing is within their scope. I encouraged her to contact the EAP, but I don’t know if she ever did.

It all came to a head when she forgot to punch out again for most of her shifts over two weeks. The estimated shift end times she gave us when prompted seemed suspicious, so we compared them to computer use and parking ramp data. This unfortunately showed that she was significantly overestimating her work time. I don’t think she did this on purpose, but it demonstrated exactly why we require people to actually punch in and out instead of guesstimating at the end of a pay period.

All of this put together resulted in a brief suspension. I was very explicit in the suspension discussion that we believed she could do better, and that we would be happy to make accommodations to help her succeed. I also was very clear that we wanted this to be not a punishment but a wake-up call that the behavior needed to change if she wanted to keep working here.

On her first morning back after the suspension, she submitted her two-week notice. She said the stress of “trying to be perfect” was going to lead her to make more mistakes, so she didn’t think she could stay. I had somewhat mixed feelings about this until she admitted that she had forgotten her badge at home that morning, so she needed a leader to clock her in and out for the day. That felt like a last straw to me, to be honest.

A few days before the end of the two week notice period, she changed her mind and said she wanted to stay. Thankfully I had already read some good advice here at AAM about this situation! I reminded her that we had formally accepted her resignation, and explained that we would proceed with her last day as planned. She was not happy, but we all got through it.

Thank you and all the commenters for the thoughtful advice and discussion, not only about this situation, but also throughout the years!

I had a few minutes to spare today, so I was trying to get caught up on recent K-pop releases. One that I found was "Nerdy," by ifeye, which came out on 8 April. I know nothing about this band, but I liked this song and I loved the video. The video is like a cross between i-dle's "I Do" and Weeekly's "Tag Me", "Zig Zag", and "After School" (which I think of as a trilogy), so it hit in a really enjoyable place for me. I hope you like it!

One of the books I'm currently reading is volume 3 of I'm in Love with the Villainess, a Japanese light novel by Inori. As I was reading this morning, I was struck by this quote from one of the characters:

They say the elderly tend to look back fondly on the past; I think it's because we envy our younger selves, who had yet to make the mistake we've made now. It's easier to wish to change your past than to acknowledge what you've done.

While I wouldn't classify myself as elderly, I can certainly relate to this idea — when I look back, I find myself not thinking that the past itself was inherently better, but instead that had I done something different — if I could have magically had then the knowledge I have now — that I might perhaps have been able to end up in a better place now.

I was in Manchester for a wedding over the weekend, which entailed a couple of long train journeys! To pass the time on the journey, I revived one of my favourite memes on my Tumblr:

Give me any two (or more) characters I’m familiar with, and I’ll tell you how they would cope in an ‘oh no, there’s only one bed’ scenario!

Here are the results! (You can also find my responses from the last time I did this over here.) As before, my responses exist on a spectrum from ‘general thoughts’ to ‘tiny ficlet’. The Danganronpa, Hundred Line and Omori scenarios contain spoilers.

The Hundred Line: Takumi and Eito )

Spider-Man: Peter, Harry and MJ )

Umineko: Beatrice and Battler )

Danganronpa: first-game survivors, Hinata and Kuzuryuu, Koizumi and Tsumiki )

DN Angel: Daisuke and Satoshi )

Top Gear: writer’s choice )

Severance: Helena and Cobel )

Sonic the Hedgehog: Sonic and Tails )

Omori: Sunny and Basil )
